Project Description

Craig Simpson from Landcare Trust NZ was contracted to introduce Macroinvertebrate Community Index (MCI) testing and rapid habitat assessment as a practical hands-on field event in the Tokanui, Waipapa and Waikawa streams. Craig also spoke about what has worked well in the Pomahaka and shared some base ideas for success.  

Objectives

  • Create ownership of local streams and individual farms environmental effects through knowledge of MCI and what influences stream health.
  • Bring the testing and results to life for the community; make them real time and accessible. 
  • Build engagement for the Waikawa Catchment Group and help establish the newer Tokanui and Waipapa/Haldane groups.  

Outcomes

  • Increased engagement, acknowledgement of local groups and ownership of water ways.
  • Lead farmers identified and new members joined the Catchment Groups.
  • 49 attendees.
