Southland Catchment Group Christmas Competition lighting up the region

The Southland Catchment Group Christmas Competition is lighting up the region for the second year with a record number of entries spreading festive cheer.

Last year, the Hedgehope Makarewa, Waihopai, Gore and Mid Aparima Catchment Groups came up with the idea of Christmas displays across the region to spread some rural festive cheer throughout Southland. And it was a huge success.

This year the number of farm Christmas displays has blossomed as people in rural areas get into the spirit of the season. Some amazing prizes have also been contributed by generous sponsors.

Thriving Southland senior catchment co-ordinator Rachael Halder said everyone in Southland was able to enjoy the amazing Christmas displays being created - a map with all the locations, and entry details, can be found on the Thriving Southland website -

“It’s a great opportunity for people to check out the displays around Southland, and there’s still time to enter,” she said.

The friendly competition was a great example of Southland’s catchment group communities connecting with and celebrating their communities, Halder said.

“The incredible range of displays showcase how fantastic Southland farmers are at embracing the fun when life is a bit serious.”

People can enter anytime up until Christmas, but spot prizes will be announced on the December 23, Halder said.

“Let’s see your jolly creations and show some festive cheer. People can enter as a catchment group, business, individual, farm, property or whomever. Whether it’s bales painted bright, pallets all lined in a row, or wherever your imagination takes you, we can’t wait to see your rural Christmas display.”

There are prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd, a people’s choice award, and loads of awesome spot prizes from some great southern businesses.
