Southland Catchment Groups

Southland's Catchment Groups are local communities working together to improve the health of our land, water and biodiversity, while building resilient farming businesses and connected rural communities.

There are 37 Catchment Groups across Southland, covering more than 90% of the region, with new groups continuing to form. Whether you're looking to connect with your local group, attend an event, or see what projects are happening in your area, this is the place to start.

Map updated February 2026. Catchment groups define their own boundaries. If you spot a boundary that's not quite right, please send us a picture with the correct boundary line drawn on a map and we will get it updated as soon as possible.

What Catchment Groups do

Every Catchment Group is unique, but they all share a common goal: bringing local people together to find practical solutions for their catchment. Groups run projects, organise field days and workshops, undertake monitoring, restore waterways and biodiversity, and share knowledge that supports both farming and the environment.<add a group picture>
